Virtual communities are groups that form using computers and networking technology to discuss topics of mutual interest at the convenience of each participant, they cover multiple of topics. Virtual communities can be very useful in education and learning, where students can begin with a large idea and branch off to study and discover an area of interest in-depth. I have learnt about several virtual communities and I will share the following two virtual communities that will be useful in education.
Edutopia was founded by George Lucas an innovative and award-winning filmmaker in 1991. As mentioned in their website Edutopia an educational foundation is dedicated to transforming K-12 education so that all students can acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to thrive in their studies, careers, and adult lives. This foundation helps implement six transformational strategies: project-based learning, social and emotional learning, comprehensive assessment, teacher development, integrated studies, and technology integration. These strategies help educators to transform schools. By creating strong cultures of creativity and curiosity, educators can engage students as active participants in their own education, rather than passive recipients of facts and formulas.

The second virtual community I would like to share is the Quora. Its popular as we can find different topics and answers. Quora was founded by Adam D'Angelo and Charlie Cheever in 2009. Quora is a Q&A site where anyone can ask a question and get answers, followed, and edited by Internet users, either factually or in the form of opinions. Quora allows users to create personalized homepages that feature the things they want to learn more about by following topics, questions, people and boards. Also, rather than getting one answer the site allows all users to weigh in on what they think the best answers are. The genius behind Quora is that users can up vote answers that are the best.
